Product Description

Winner of the American Book Award and the Oliver C. Cox
Anti-Racism Award of The American Sociological Association

Americans have lost touch with their history, and in Lies My Teacher Told Me Professor James Loewen shows why. After surveying eighteen leading high school American history texts, he has concluded that not one does a decent job of making history interesting or memorable. Marred by an embarrassing combination of blind patriotism, mindless optimism, sheer misinformation, and outright lies, these books omit almost all the ambiguity, passion, conflict, and drama from our past.

In this revised edition, packed with updated material, Loewen explores how historical myths continue to be perpetuated in today's climate and adds an eye-opening chapter on the lies surrounding 9/11 and the Iraq War. From the truth about Columbus's historic voyages to an honest evaluation of our national leaders, Loewen revives our history, restoring the vitality and relevance it truly possesses.

Thought provoking, nonpartisan, and often shocking, Loewen unveils the real America in this iconoclastic classic beloved by high school teachers, history buffs, and enlightened citizens across the country.

5 out of 5 stars A book eveyone should read !!   July 25, 2010

Americas founders were not saints and that the United State's true history is much more complex, much to the disappointment of the far right. Great Book !

4 out of 5 stars good background information - not as suitable for in-class student use   July 20, 2010

Interesting information in the book. I was hoping to use it in the class but really not suitable for that.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, especially for HS students   July 19, 2010

I love history so I read a lot of American Pageant as my son took AP US History. I was appalled at the florid language and constantly wondering and rereading to get questions answered. This book filled in numerous gaps and holes... I couldn't put it down. It also helps explain why the AP exam questions ask for analysis of information that can't be obtained from the school text or even from cursory web searches. Lots of aha moments for me.

Loved it, though I agree that sometimes the writer was so strident it felt like he was yelling at me. Still, a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Educational Tool   July 11, 2010

I had a vague recollection of a bunch of dates and names I was told to memorize in history class. I had a vague idea that these lists were inadequate. I didn't know they were downright lies. This guy doesn't trash teachers, just the textbooks they're made to teach from. Non-white kids and girls have been especially mal-served by these books, which leave out not only the injustices done to minorities in the so-called New World, but also leave out their positive contributions. This book shocked my eyes open. My 11th grader, a half-black-half-white girl, has been assigned one of the textbooks this author critiques. I have the summer to make a list of its defects to bring to her teacher's attention in the fall. I am determined, with this book's help, to make sure my kid knows the true context in which she's living her life now.

4 out of 5 stars Just a note on the new edition   July 10, 2010

I like that the new edition includes recent historical developments like the war on terror and its coverage in textbooks. My problem with the new edition, however, is in the new type settings. It's printed now like best selling fiction or cheap journalism. I miss the old style which was more like a textbook. This new one is really tough on the eyes. It doesn't match the subject matter. I realize this is a bit petty, but some of you will understand. For those that do know what I mean, get the older edition.
