Product Description A compact edition of an award-winning best-seller -- more affordable than the celebrated original, but otherwise identical. At a critical time in Canada's history, the Group of Seven revolutionized the country's appreciation of itself by celebrating Canada as a wild and beautiful land. These paintings of the wilderness evoke the same response in viewers today as they did when first exhibited. The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson includes many never -- before reproduced paintings and presents the most complete and extensive collection of these artists' works ever published. The 400 paintings and drawings reveal the remarkable genius of all 10 painters who at some point were part of the movement. Tom Thomson, who died before the Group was established, was always present in the public mind. Included are works by: - Frank Carmichael - Frank Johnston - A.J. Casson - Arthur Lismer - Le Moine FitzGerald - I.E.H. MacDonald - Lawren Harris - Tom Thomson - Edwin Holgate - F.H. Varley - A.Y. Jackson The artwork is organized by the various regions of Canada, with additional sections on the war years and still-life paintings. Introductory essays provide a context for a greater understanding and appreciation of Canada's most celebrated artists.

Excellent Art Resource March 24, 2010 Kay Lorbiecki Silcox's book is a great resource for anyone interested in the Group of Seven's work. It is also a must-have for the serious art student interested in a better understanding of the use of light for depth and dimension. Just an outstanding collection of paintings and the background information is excellent.
Distinctly Canadian November 6, 2009 L.A. in CA The Group of Seven (and then some) set about creating an art form that was uniquely Canadian. There is no arguing that they succeeded beyond anyone's wildest imagination.
Fred Jacob, writing in the Toronto Mail & Empire of 1919, summed it up very well:
"In their work the spirit of young Canada has found itself...It is not commercial and it is purposed for pure love. It is not ostentatious. It is highly
intellectual and poetic and without any debasing appeal to the senses. It is neither gross nor vulgar. It possesses the charm of out-of-doors and the grandeur
and dignity of nature remote and supreme."
The book itself is just physically beautiful (and heavy). Many, many of these paintings I had never seen before. The colors, the lighting, the brush strokes are awe inspiring.
Although there are pages of information scattered throughout, this is predominantly a picture book. It begins with the author introducing us to the artists. Following that are pages and pages of incredible artwork, neatly arranged by subject matter. At the end of the book, there is the Chronology, the Bibliography and indexes. Highly recommended!
Absolutely Gorgeous February 27, 2009 Kimberly (Texas) This is the finest book I have ever seen on these Canadian artists. A real treasure. You will not be disappointed.
Unreal beauty September 27, 2008 J. M. Adamik (Dallas area -Texas) I can't really add anything substantive to what the other reviewers have said but wanted to add my five star review - this is just a beautiful book that any artist or any person interested in painting would love to have.
the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson September 2, 2008 Amanda (Hayesville, NC) I love the book! I wanted a book with more paintings than text and that's just what I got. Beautiful paintings on page after page. You won't be disappointed.
